RC. Sproul tells a story of a terrible fire in a home and a fire department completely overwhelmed by the tenacity of the flames. It seemed as though no matter what they tried, the flame became more intense. They continued to douse the home with water, but nothing changed. All of a sudden, to their chagrin, they heard the cry of a little baby come from the house. They were overwhelmed with agony and then a man came out of left field bursting through the chaos. Several policemen and firemen ran into the house. Other firemen sat as they watched time elapse; every second seemed like a year.

All of the sudden they see the man resurface through the front of the door with soot and burn marks all over himself. He had ashes laced all over his clothes and in his arms he had a blanket wrapped tightly. When he got to the grass in the front of the home, he gently placed down the blanket. All of his stock certificates flew out, his insurance policy flew out, and the title deed to all of his possessions flew out. You see the fire department thought when that man went into the house he was going to get that little child, but in reality, he was going to get what was most important to him. Every man will choose what is most important to him.

Luke 12:33-34 (NKJV)
Sell what you have and give alms; provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Acts 5:1-4 (NKJV)
But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet. But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”

1 Timothy 6:10 (NKJV)
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
