Some years ago, in the Seattle Special Olympics, nine contestants who were all mentally challenged in some way assembled at the starting block for the 100-yard dash. At the gun, they all started out, not exactly with a dash, but with a relish to run the race and finish and win. All except one boy who once he started out in the race tumbled over the asphalt several times and began to cry. The other eight heard the boy cry. They slowed down and looked back. They all turned around and went back every single one of them. One girl with Down Syndrome bent down, kissed him, and said, “This will make it better.” All nine linked arms and walked across the finish line together. Sproul tells a story of a terrible fire in a home and a fire department completely overwhelmed by the tenacity of the flames. It seemed as though no matter what they tried, the flame became more intense. They continued to douse the home with water, but nothing changed. All of a sudden, to their chagrin, they heard the cry of a little baby come from the house. They were overwhelmed with agony and then a man came out of left field bursting through the chaos. Several policemen and firemen ran into the house. Other firemen sat as they watched time elapse; every second seemed like a year. Every man will choose what is most important to him. You see the fire department thought when that man went into the house he was going to get that little child, but in reality, he was going to get what was most important to him. Do you remember when you were little and your mother may have been in the kitchen baking a cake? You would watch her in anticipation. You would watch her add flour, sugar, and vanilla. You would see her blend these ingredients together and your anticipation of how good that cake was going to taste would be so strong. If you were like me, you would keep going in the kitchen and maybe peek in the oven and see the cake start to turn brown on the top. You might then yell to your mother and tell her the cake was ready. But what would she do when she came in the kitchen? She would go in the draw, take out a toothpick, open the oven door, and insert the toothpick into the cake. And when he would speak at conferences, he would get so tired that he could barely stand after two full days. Over the years, he would try orthopedic inserts; he even purchased some orthopedic shoes that were made in France. The salesman described them as the best fitting shoes in France. When he arrived home, he decided to compare how good these new shoes felt compared with some existing soft soled shoes and his sneakers. When he got home, he tried the soft sole shoe on one foot and the new orthopedic shoe on the other foot, and then he started walking around. After walking around for a while and getting in a panic, he took off the soft sole shoe and then he put on his sneakers. When you go grocery shopping on an empty stomach and without a shopping list, almost everything looks especially attractive, and your shopping cart ends up filled with too many snacks and not enough nutrition. And when the cashier rings up your items and announces your total you’re in a state of shock! The worst part is that then you start to rationalize the amount of money you spent but still didn’t get the items you needed! The object of a grocery list is to purchase a nutritionally balanced diet for your family. Shopping without a list encourages the likelihood of purchasing the wrong food. Similarly if we don’t establish priorities in our lives and choose wisely, we’ll wind up making decisions without thinking–just because a particularly opportunity looks attractive. We’ll wind up piling things in to the baskets of our lives just like when we’re in a well-stocked grocery store and we shop without a list. The object of setting priorities is to allocate our time and money according to God’s desires. But too often we choose our priorities with the same lack of foresight as our trips to the grocery store, and the things that we give priority to are simply not what we need–or importantly, what God wants!! Frogs In Cream

The sides were so slick that they could not climb out of it. The frogs had to paddle and paddle just to stay alive; this went on and on for a long time. One frog got so tired that he gave up. He said, “We are never going to get out of here, we’re wasting our time!” He quit, and sunk to the bottom of the bowl. The other frog was more determined; he did not want to quit, so he kept paddling and paddling. A little more time passed, and he noticed that the consistency of cream was changing: it got thicker and thicker. This made the paddling more difficult to do, but the frog refused to quit. Before long, the cream turned to butter, and the frog was able to step out of the butter and walk away. We need to have the same attitude in our lives sometimes. To be an attraction; to make the store look great and enticing, and lure the customer into the store. The mannequin sets the tone of the store through the clothes that it wears so that people will come in and spend money in the store. Catch this, the clothes on the dummy did not come from the dummy, the clothes on the dummy came from the owner of the store, and the owner of the store put clothes on the dummy so that folks on the outside will be drawn into the store. When you put your money in the bank you do it for two reasons, to protect it, and to grow, or expand it. It’s a lot harder for a thief to get to your money out of the bank than from under your pillow. And depositing our money in the bank means that if you leave it there it will gain interest and expand and after a certain amount of time you’ll have more money than you deposited. So to be a good steward over something you want to protect and expand. This is why in the Parable of the Talents the first two men immediately went out to start getting a return and endeavored to maximize God’s resources. But the third guy essentially did nothing; he buried his talent in the ground where the money couldn’t even gain interest. The job of a steward is to protect and expand the resources of another. The captain sets a compass heading in the direction he wants to go. He locks in that heading on the autopilot, and then the boat takes off in that direction; so far so good. It gets interesting when the craft hits a large wave or a series of waves. The autopilot does not allow the external action to alter its course. It keeps its original decision in place, heads straight for the goal, and then goes through the wave. There is a splash, lots of rocking and spraying, and an immediate correction by the autopilot if the ship is knocked off course in any way. When I say immediate, I mean immediate. A man named George Wilson killed a government employee in 1830 who was caught in the act of obstructing the mail. Since he was not a law enforcement officer and he killed a government employee, Wilson was tried and condemned to death by hanging. But the then president of the United States, Andrew Jackson granted him an executive pardon. George Wilson, however, refused to accept the pardon. The department of corrections did not know what to do. The case was taken to the Supreme Court where Chief Justice Marshall ruled that “a pardon is a slip of paper, the value of which is determined by the acceptance of the person to be pardoned. If it is refused, it is no pardon. George Wilson must be hanged.” And hanged he was. Even if we are opposed to the death penalty, we still cannot but agree with the principle that a pardon granted has to be accepted to become active. This is the point of the gospel. When God forgives us, we must accept God’s forgiveness. You enter him into all types of competitions and he breaks his leg playing Frisbee. We all know that the dog is going to take at least a couple of weeks to heal. Would you make your dog go out and perform injured? The answer is no because you love your dog, and you want him to get well so that he can play Frisbee another day. As a result, you may lose a Frisbee competition because you were a no-show. When we have Biblical values, we know that if we are asked to do things by other people who do not understand us as well as we need to be understood, they may be asking us to play Frisbee with a broken leg. We know that if we do, we are going to re-injure ourselves. This is when we have to allow our “yes to be yes and our no to be no” (Matthew 5:37), which is simply a way of protecting ourselves. It may not seem loving to the person who wants to control you, but it is loving to God because you are taking responsibility to fix that puppy’s broken leg.
