Some years ago, in the Seattle Special Olympics, nine contestants who were all mentally challenged in some way assembled at the starting block for the 100-yard dash. At the gun, they all started out, not exactly with a dash, but with a relish to run the race and finish and win. All except one boy who once he started out in the race tumbled over the asphalt several times and began to cry. The other eight heard the boy cry. They slowed down and looked back. They all turned around and went back every single one of them. One girl with Down Syndrome bent down, kissed him, and said, “This will make it better.” All nine linked arms and walked across the finish line together. Everyone in the stadium cheered, this went on for minutes and people were still telling the story. Why? Because deep down we know this one thing; what matters in this life is more than just winning for ourselves. A young mother decided to take her son, who was just learning to play the piano, to a concert at Carnegie Hall by one of the greatest pianists of all time—Paderewski. During the intermission, she suddenly realized her son was gone. He had like he had done so many times in the past, become bored and went off to explore. She became frantic and as the house lights begin to dim for the second half of the performance, she hears the familiar notes of “chopsticks” being played on the grand piano on stage. She looks up and there is her son at the magnificent Steinway grand piano. The crowd is aghast. She is mortified. But suddenly the great Paderewski appears and sits down beside the young boy and tells him to keep playing his simple song. With his right hand he reaches around the young boy and adds the high notes and with his left, he adds the low notes and together they play a beautiful song that transforms the entire hall!!! We are all like that small boy surrounded by the arms of God. We need to lean back and trust in God’s power and glory and create a ministry that will transform the world where we have been planted. Have you ever seen a big dog on a leash and the person is being pulled in each and every direction? You keep listening to the owner yell at the dog “come over here, come over here” and it looks like the dog is walking the person rather than the person walking the dog. This is exactly how some people live their Christian life. They are living their Christian lives on a law leash! “Stop doing this, stop doing that, read your bible, go to church…” There is nothing wrong with these things in themselves, but we are being jerked around by a law leash. Now, have you ever seen a dog walk by its master without a leash yet they never leave their master? The person walks, the dog walks. The person stops, the dog stops. You know why you do not need a leash? Because of their relationship. When you walk in a house, you can always tell the difference between a grace dog and a law dog. A law dog always has its tail tucked in underneath, it is intimidated by its master because it thinks the master is going to yell, “Do this!” or “I am going to spank you with the newspaper!” But when the grace dog sees its master, its tail starts to wag because it knows that there is a relationship. He had an only son whom he loved with all of his heart and might. Unfortunately, this young man got sick and he died. Fitzgerald was shattered at the loss of his son. As time passed, Fitzgerald died and he had a very large art collection that was extremely valuable but there was no one to inherit it. His wife had long since been dead. The first piece of art was a picture of his son and it did not have the beauty of all the other pieces. It was sort of a personal thing that had a lot of sentimental value to him. And of course, people were coming for the expensive pieces not this sentimental picture. There was a married couple who were in the airport and as they were walking, they approached one of those moving sidewalks. So the husband got on but his wife decided to walk. Now his journey was easy because he was resting on an external source to get him where he needed to be. His wife was breathing hard because she was relying on herself. As the husband watched her, he turned away. He got to the end of the sidewalk and was looking back to see how long it would take his wife to get to him. As he was waiting, he heard his wife call his name. She had been waiting for him. You know why? Because all of a sudden, it dawned on her that this was too much work, so she hopped aboard one of the golf carts and caught a ride. This is called grace!!! Locals were trying to repair the statue and prepare it so that it could be on display. And as they began to repair the statue they could not find the hands that went on it. This statue was a picture of Jesus with his arms outstretched and down below the statue were these words. “Come unto me” They looked everywhere for the hands but they could not find them to finish the sculpture. They did not know what to do since it was a very prominent statue. So someone got an idea and this is what they did; they left the arms off the statue and they changed the sign underneath it “He has no hands but your hands” What a powerful picture! She was sitting in the middle of a big open room with high arching windows when a bird flew in. It flew up to the ceiling and was trapped. Trying to get out it flew to every window but nothing happened. It flew to where the light was coming in, but it couldn’t get out. It flew window after window, but it would only bang against the window and fall back. It would try to force its way out of the house through every little crack or crevice. The young swallows were perched on a dead branch over a lake. One of the adult swallows got alongside the chicks and started pushing them to the end of the branch. They pushed until finally one of the birds fell off. Somewhere between the branch and the water that was 4 feet below, the wings started to work, and the bird took off on its own. The second one did the same exact thing, but the third one was not to be bullied. As it started to fall off it grabbed the branch with its foot. But the parent was not sentimental; it peaked at the poor chick’s foot until it was more painful to fall than it was to hang on than deal with the insecurities of flying. The grip was released and the inexperienced wings started to pump. The mature swallow knew what the little chick did not and that is it would fly, and there was no danger in making it do what it was designed to do. A man named George Wilson killed a government employee in 1830 who was caught in the act of obstructing the mail. Since he was not a law enforcement officer and he killed a government employee, Wilson was tried and condemned to death by hanging. But the then president of the United States, Andrew Jackson granted him an executive pardon. George Wilson, however, refused to accept the pardon. The department of corrections did not know what to do. The case was taken to the Supreme Court where Chief Justice Marshall ruled that “a pardon is a slip of paper, the value of which is determined by the acceptance of the person to be pardoned. If it is refused, it is no pardon. George Wilson must be hanged.” And hanged he was. Even if we are opposed to the death penalty, we still cannot but agree with the principle that a pardon granted has to be accepted to become active. This is the point of the gospel. When God forgives us, we must accept God’s forgiveness. To polish it, you need three things: a rock tumbler, some abrasive grit, and at least one other stone. A rock tumbler is little more than a jar lying on its side atop a series of rollers. Inside the jar, you place some abrasive grit, the unpolished gemstone and at least one other stone . When the tumbler begins to roll, the rocks will slowly rise up the wall of the jar and then drop, crashing into one another over and over again. Each time they collide, the grit removes a tiny bit of the surface material on top of the gemstone. Each time they collide the stones become smoother and smoother but it’s a very slow process. What happens if you forget the abrasive grit? The stones will still collide, but without an abrasive grit, there is nothing to smooth the stones. They’ll continue to crash into each other and perhaps even chip or damage each other. However, the finished product will look no smoother than it did when you began.
